Ford Transit Camper Conversion

My first van Conversion!

Moving to the UK from Australia presented some issues in terms of touring,

The biggest differences are:

  1. The roads are far narrower

  2. Available free camping sites are few and far between

  3. Sunlight is not guaranteed for solar

  4. The temperature fluctuations are far greater and colder!

I knew I didn't want to do another caravan here - I don't have the spare space to store one and although I can drive and tow about any size, I just didn't want to deal with the issues in the back lanes, so a van was the solution! The problem? I wanted it to be all inclusive, Bathroom, Shower, Dinette, Bed etc so it had to be big!

My partner Zoe and I got on the hunt, looked at a few options and we found this 2009 Ford Transit Jumbo- Its a twin wheel rear, extra high roof van that essentially is the largest offering from Ford at the time.

Now This Van was an EX BT van, Complete with Racking, Work Lights and PTO Generator and air compressor! So it needed a good strip down and tidy up, and so it began!

We weren't looking to build a show van, just something that worked and was comfortable, We decided this needed to have the following:

  1. Toilet

  2. Shower

  3. Insulation

  4. Heating

  5. Ventilation

  6. Dinette

  7. Bed

Pretty simple right?

Because we were building it from Scratch, I decided to not have any gas on board. This is a fully electric build and you can see why i reason this here

Since my last build Lithium had again become more affordable, and since I couldn't rely on consistent sun in the UK I had to change how I set this up, so what I built was the following:

  • 2 x 300ah Lifepo4 Batteries (600ah total)

  • 3 x 200w Solar Panels (600w total )

  • 1x 40a Mppt Charge controller

  • 1x 60a DC2DC Charger

  • 1x 1000w inverter for Fridge and light duty electrics

  • 1x 3000w Inverter on remote switch

  • 240v Full size fridge with freezer

  • 240v Air Fryer

  • 240v Microwave

  • 240v coffee machine

  • 240v Under counter 15ltr hot water cylinder

  • 240v induction cooktop

  • Diesel heater for heating requirements

So aside from the Diesel heater, we are all electric with plenty of power to heat water, cook meals and enjoy ourselves just about anywhere we can drive- and we do!

The van's still not finished, but is entirely usable. We have toured it to nearly every corner of the UK! We have toured Scotland, Exmoor, Dorset, Portland, Norfolk, Kent - just about everywhere! The next plan is to take it onto Europe, but the build got side tracked due to getting our biggest project yet, a 37ft Motorboat- YEP!
